It took 8 years before 50 million people gained access to radios. It took television 13 years to earn an audience that size. And it just took Instagram a year and a half. Right now, it has over 1 billion active users a month.
Instagram is also one of the social media platforms that has the most active user base and it is a much more engaging platform as compared to others.
A study was done by the rock band Paramore with their social media accounts. The same piece of content was posted to their Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts simultaneously, with these results:
Facebook Fan Page (3,200,000 fans) – 9,405 likes
Twitter (3,350,000 followers) – 433 retweets and 289 favorites
Instagram (360,000 followers) – 52,237 likes and 315 comments
Paramore’s Instagram has one-tenth following of their Facebook fan page, yet generated 5 times more responses from their following.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably wondering how Instagram will shape your branding and what kind of tangible results will it be able to bring you and your business.
If you’re an e-commerce brand, a personal brand, or simply a business that sells products, you’re in the right place.
Before I carry on with the real reasons why Instagram marketing is a game-changer, do understand that it performs 10x better when you’re in the B2C market.
If you’re targeting the B2B market, you should check out other social media platforms like LinkedIn or Facebook.
Now that I’ve got that concern out of the way, let’s get to the first game-changing reason.
Improving Brand Awareness
“Social media: a term to describe the current state of the internet and the place where the consumer attention is” – Gary Vaynerchuck
I’m not going to talk much about this particular point as statistics are the best in showing how much brand awareness you’re missing if you’re not winning on Instagram.
Here are 3 Instagram demographic statistics in 2020 to really watch out for, and the percentages mention will definitely increase as the years go by.
- 67% of 18 to 29 year olds use Instagram. That means your current and future prospects are all on Instagram.
- 70% of users look up a brand on Instagram. If your brand isn’t on Instagram, they won’t really have a clear insight of who they’re buying from.
- 80% of the accounts follow a business on Instagram. Looking through the lens of this perspective, if these users aren’t following you, they’re following your competitors!
If it’s currently hard for you to reach out to more customers or you’re looking to target a larger crowd, Instagram is definitely the best B2C social media platform to use right now, especially if you’re selling products.
Attaining Brand Authority
There is an extremely strong power you have when you’ve gained a ton of followers on Instagram. And this is possibly the strongest power that I’ve seen when it comes to social media.
It is the fact that the crowd leads the way in buyer preferences.
Most of our preferences are learned and formed by social norms and expectations. The only reason why teenagers spend a ton of money on supreme or hypebeast apparel is due to the preference that it is valuable to them.
Just take a look at one of the shirt here:
It’s just a white shirt with a red box and the name supreme in it but it costs an average retail price of $60.
That is honestly a learned preference from the initial hundreds of thousands that have followed Supreme.
Now, it has millions of followers and it’s just getting more and more expensive, all because they’ve now attained brand authority.
We probably won’t understand unless we’re a youth, but Instagram has served its purpose of building a crazy fan base which is now willing to pay those kinds of shirts for hundreds of bucks.
Of course, being on Instagram isn’t just about the followers, it’s about what you can get from them, and this moves us to the next point.
Consistent Traffic, Leads & Sales
While people are paying Facebook marketers $1 to $10 per lead, I’m constantly getting daily leads from just 1 of my Instagram accounts with $0 ad spent.
I don’t say this as means to brag, but to show you how effective Instagram can be. Instead of paying for an ad that will reach you to thousands of people.
Why not post a picture that can have the same effect while driving traffic and leads as well?
Here’s one of our post’s analytics which generated tons of traffics coming to our page:
You might be thinking “that’s not how it works, how can 1 post itself bring you the same number of high quality leads as ads?” And you are definitely right, it isn’t just 1 post itself.
In order to reach that 1 post which will bring you that influx of organic leads, it starts from improving brand awareness and attaining brand authority.
The role of Instagram isn’t to constantly sell them right in their face. I’ve seen tons of brands that continuously shove products in their social media feed and its clear that their intention is just to get people to buy their products.
The most effective role of Instagram and social media is to develop and nurture a community of prospects who will later convert for you over and over again.
At the end of the day, a third of Instagram users have already purchased from the platform. If you aren’t nurturing your prospects, your competitors are.
Winning Customer Satisfaction
This is the most underrated benefit of social media in general. The purpose of social media isn’t just for you to post and get people to follow you.
It’s to actually network with the people. Yet, most brands don’t take the effort to connect with their audience on a social network!
Instagram stories is one of the best functions to really understand what your customers like and dislike about what you’re currently doing.
Using Instagram stories, you’ll be able to create polls for customers to vote on which they would prefer as well as the ability to get direct feedback just like a google form!
It’s one of the most underutilized functions that has allowed me to give my audience exactly what they want.
Aside from getting customer feedback, the most important thing to do is to always find opportunities to connect with them and provide them a better customer experience.
According to salesforce, 80% of the customers say that the experience a company provides is as important as its products and services, and 67% said that they’ll pay more for a great experience!
Having your brand on Instagram is the best way to ensure that you’re hearing the feedback from your customers and also providing them a great experience through the content that you’re posting for them!
The best way to utilize this is basically to answer their questions, objections, or concerns through the content that you’re posting.
This might sound fairly obvious but only a few brands are doing this (and they’re usually the bigger brands).
Compared to Facebook, it’s a lot easier to get organic reach and amass a community on Instagram. Why? Because Facebook’s organic reach is pretty much dead.
It has been turned into a pay to play game where only the biggest donators to Facebook can continue to dominate on that platform.
On Instagram, your posts can reach 10x more people than Facebook, so it’s a lot easier to gain traffic, leads and sales without spending a dime on ads.
Of course, we’ll never know when Instagram becomes a pay to play game as well, hence, now is always the best time to hop onto it before its too late.
At the end of the day Instagram marketing is very different from Facebook marketing. And it boils down to the difference of building a brand and spending on ads.
In the long run, building a brand will always win as you’ll be attracting a large group of fans who continuously converts for you.
Building a community of followers who become supporters is the best way to build brand loyalty. Your product might not be very different from what the market serves.
But as long as your audience perceives your brand 10x better than competitors, you will develop brand loyalty. And these people aren’t just followers, they’re your fans and advocates that will naturally promote your brand to others.
Here’s the misconception that tons of people have about creating a buzz:
People think that it’s about going viral to attract a huge crowd. But the best way is to have your loyal fans to create the buzz for you.
Referral campaigns will be a lot easier when you’ve developed brand loyalty as you don’t have to create new marketing awareness campaigns or spend more on ads to get people to know your new product.
Once it’s out, your fans will do most of the work for you. In fact, if you really think about it, the only reason why you knew some of the world’s biggest brands are due to word of mouth referrals.
Boost SEO Ranking
This is a powerful but little known fact, as every social media channel ranks in Google search. The best part about users discovering your social media is the personal touch that one can get if they were to go onto it.
Another great opportunity to boost your website’s ranking is by placing your link in the Instagram bio. When users find your Instagram page, they’ll most likely press on that link and they’ll be directed to your website.
Hence it’s extremely important that you give them a clear page to go to rather than your general website.
For example, if you’re a fashion store, you can direct them to the bestselling apparel rather than directing them to the general storefront.
You should also be creating a call to actions in your posts to get people to click the link in your bio. Never expect your followers to just click the link without you asking them to do it. That’s like expecting a kid to eat his/her vegetables.

By now, you should realize that all of these benefits are not just standalone benefits but an interlinked one. Still can’t see it yet? Let me paint the whole process for you.
It all starts off from brand awareness, where people get to know about you and what you do. As you start to gain more followers, you’ll develop a positioning of authority in your market, and that’s where you’ll gain even more traffic.
Additionally, the time you use to nurture them will convert these traffic into leads and sales. Most importantly, you should be keeping your customers happy during this whole process.
Once they’ve bought once from you and their happy about the process, they’ll become loyal fans who will bring in more referrals.
When your Instagram page pops out in the SEO ranking, the only thing that people will see are happy raving fans of yours.
So in essence, here is the entire process and the power of Instagram.
Instagram is the most popular social media platform. Whether you are running an e-commerce store or building a brand, you have no choice but to leverage it.
